Clear sound with a sense of speed
Side-curved diffraction horn that spreads most naturally
The FA280A is a large horn with exterior dimensions of 806W × 330H × 513D, made as a carved wooden horn. Traditional horns often have narrow opening dimensions relative to their cutoff frequency, resulting in reduced frequency response below 1 kHz in most cases. This unit improves that by setting the cutoff frequency higher relative to the opening area.

For horn expansion, the exponential horn constant was often used in traditional horns, but this approach tended to cause a drop in frequency characteristics near the cutoff. Therefore, by adopting a hyperbolic horn curve, we successfully achieved a nearly flat and wide frequency response up to around the 280 Hz cutoff frequency. In the FA280A, by reviewing the horn expansion constant, it can be used from 400 Hz, which is 1.5 times the cutoff frequency.

FA280AThe top and bottom panels are crafted by carving them from an extremely large laminated Asada cherry block measuring 810 × 470 × 142 mm. Each panel weighs about 40 kg. Additionally, the side panels are carved from 62 mm thick laminated wood, requiring nearly 100 kg of laminated wood per unit. Since laminated wood is made by layering plank-sized materials from raw logs, nearly 250 kg of raw wood is needed per horn. This is the maximum for a carved wooden horn. Because it is carved, there is almost no horn resonance, resulting in pure, clear sound free from the horn ringing often associated with large horns.

In the F280A, the laminated wood board is used vertically in the front-back direction, which has excellent sound transmission speed. Therefore, the sound spreads, the sound emanates well, and the sound is clear and full of speed. Also, the internal separator fins are in the sound path and are thin and weak in strength, so there is a risk of noise. This machine uses extremely hard and durable African ebony wood, and is assembled by cutting grooves in the upper and lower plates and sandwiching the separator fins, so the separator fins are thin and sharp, but still have sufficient strength.

Following the shape of the side curved diffraction horn with internal separator fins, and in order to further improve the vertical direction, the position where the vertical opening starts to be adjusted further.throatBring it close, throatIt was designed to gradually open from close up. This allows us to control the vertical directivity down to lower frequencies, and as a result, we have succeeded in improving the frequency response in the mid-bass range and obtaining a flatter and smoother frequency response.
A horn is a device that gradually increases the sound waves emitted from the driver unit inside the sound path, increasing the volume in the process and determining the direction of the sound. Therefore, if there is an obstacle inside the sound path or a narrow area, the sound will be reflected there and cause the sound to be distorted. This machine has no dimensional comparison at any position inside the horn, so there is no disturbance in the characteristics due to reflection, and the characteristics are as smooth as possible. The directivity of this device has a moderate width of 90 degrees horizontally and 40 degrees vertically. If the horn's directivity is too wide, it will be susceptible to room reflections. Also, if the space is too narrow, the direct sound from the horn tends to be strong and harsh. The directivity of this unit has a moderate directional characteristic that is easy to hear in a general listening room.

The FA280A has sufficient strength made of gunmetal.throatAn adapter is used. The internal structure is simply converted from a round shape with a length of 60mm and a diameter of 49mm to a square shape of 50mm x 60mm.throatInside the adapter, the spread of sound waves is naturally guided to the horn, firmly supporting the connection between the driver and the horn. Gunmetal is an alloy of tin and copper that is extremely strong, and because it is heavy, it makes little noise and is famous for its beautiful sound. The weight isthroatThe portion alone weighs approximately 4 kg. This machine is made of gunmetal.throatBy setting up a support on the adapter and placing setting bases on both sides of the horn, we have created three-point support for stability during setting. The sound of a horn can also vary greatly depending on how it is set up. This unit uses three-point support to reduce the effect of vibration from the woofer unit on the sound, improving sound quality.
