The initial limited production run has concluded to great acclaim. The next batch is expected from December to sometime after January next year.

Reviving a legendary unit through refinement

A limited re-production model significantly polished with a beryllium cantilever, micro-ridge stylus, and a 1.0Ω generator system.

Description

A limited re-production model of the former YC-03S, updated to current specifications.

The YC-03S is a model that re-produces the previously listed low-impedance MC cartridge, extensively refined to current specifications.

The old YC-03S was discontinued due to difficulty in sourcing some parts and materials. In this limited re-production model, while inheriting the core design philosophy of the ebony body, the generator system, cantilever, stylus, tension wire, and internal wiring have been updated to current specifications.

It is not merely a revival; it is a revival model that reconstructs the powerful and realistic reproduction that the former YC-03S had, using current specifications.

Vibration control centered on the ebony body

The body uses African ebony wood. Ebony is one of the materials that has symbolized the company's products and is an important element in cartridges, naturally absorbing the fine vibrations transmitted from the stylus.

Rather than leaning towards the sharp resonance of a metal body, this design harnesses the moderate internal loss unique to wood, achieving both the core of the sound and a natural texture. The same ebony material is used for the stylus cover, enhancing the overall visual harmony.

1.0Ω low-impedance MC generator system

The generator employs an Ortofon-type system for stable performance. In the current YC-03S, the internal impedance has been lowered from 1.2Ω in the previous model to 1.0Ω, and the output voltage is set at 0.2mV.

As a low-impedance MC, it is designed not merely for delicacy but emphasizes the density of generated energy, sound projection, and realism. Despite the low output, it aims to clearly portray the core of the music.

Solid beryllium cantilever and micro-ridge stylus

In the former YC-03S, a 0.26mm solid boron cantilever and line contact stylus were used, but in the limited reissue model, it has been changed to a 0.35mm solid beryllium cantilever and micro-ridge stylus.

The beryllium cantilever is a material that combines toughness and lightness. In combination with the micro-ridge stylus, it carefully picks up the fine information engraved in the record grooves, enhancing the attack, resonance, and spatial clarity of the sound.

While increasing the amount of information, it does not make the sound thin; with the ebony body and low-impedance generator system, it strives for playback with density and presence.

Strength from the 0.12mm diameter tension wire

One of the major features of the YC-03S is the tension wire inside the cartridge. The tension wire is a key component located at the center of the vibration system that connects the cantilever, generator coil, and magnetic circuit.

While piano wire of about 0.06mm to 0.08mm in diameter is often used in typical cartridges, the current YC-03S uses 0.12mm diameter piano wire. Although revised from the 0.14mm diameter of the old model, it is still thicker than the standard specification.

Thin tension wires tend to increase compliance easily, offering extended high frequencies, but can weaken the sense of energy in the sound. By deliberately adopting a slightly thicker tension wire in the YC-03S, it emphasizes stiffness, core of the sound, and a strong sense of realism.

Internal wiring with 0.6mm diameter 6N copper wire

In the interior of an MC cartridge, even minimal wiring from the generator coil to the terminals can greatly affect sound quality. In the YC-03S, 0.6mm diameter 6N copper wire is used up to near the coil.

Compared to the extremely fine winding of the coil, the 0.6mm diameter 6N copper wire has a very large cross-sectional area. Even in small internal wiring, no corners are cut, aiming to transmit the generated signal's energy with minimal loss.

Mounting rigidity with a super duralumin base plate

A super duralumin base plate is attached to the lower part of the body. This structure indirectly reinforces the metallic parts of the internal magnetic circuit and increases the overall rigidity of the cartridge.

When attached to the headshell, this base plate comes into direct contact with the shell and reinforces the mounting area. By combining the natural resonance of the ebony body with the rigidity provided by the metal plate, it aims for powerful and well-defined playback.

Not a revival, but a reconstructed YC-03S

The YC-03S is a limited reissue model that inherits the name and basic concept of the old model while significantly reviewing the main specifications.

From solid boron to solid beryllium, from line-contact needle to micro-ridge stylus, and from a 1.2Ω to a 1.0Ω low-impedance generator system. Furthermore, with the 0.12mm diameter tension wire and 0.6mm diameter 6N copper internal wiring clearly stated in current documentation, both the vibration system and the signal path have been re-refined in terms of information, power, and presence.

While capturing delicate details, it does not thin out the sound, depicting the core and density of the music accurately. The YC-03S is an MC cartridge that powerfully and realistically brings out the energy inscribed on analog discs.

Refinement Content and Sound Tendency

The limited reissue YC-03S is not a simple revival of the old model. While retaining the design concept centered on the ebony body, the cantilever, stylus, generator system, tension wire, and internal wiring have been significantly reviewed.

Compared to the old model's 0.26mm solid boron/line contact stylus, the current specification adopts a 0.35mm solid beryllium/micro-ridge stylus. It has evolved in a direction that clearly reproduces the attack and resonance of sound while capturing finer details.

The generator system features a low impedance specification of 1.0Ω. Although the output voltage is relatively low at 0.2mV, it is designed with an emphasis on the density and power of generated energy. Rather than being delicate and slender, it can be described as an MC cartridge that focuses on the core of the sound, its drive, and presence.

The 0.12mm diameter tension wire is an important element that supports the backbone and strength of the sound. Additionally, with 0.6mm diameter 6N copper internal wiring, the design emphasizes the core of the sound, power, and presence from both the vibration system and signal path.

The YC-03S is not a wooden-body MC designed to only deliver a soft atmosphere. It is a cartridge with a distinct character that combines the natural resonance of the ebony body, the energetic feel characteristic of a low-impedance MC, and the high information reproduction provided by the beryllium cantilever and micro-ridge stylus.
