Innovative headshell with built-in head amplifier

Built-in head amplifier that significantly amplifies the signal level at the point closest to the cartridge

Description

When playing analog records, a tonearm is inserted between the cartridge and the phono equalizer amplifier, and a lead wire that is much thinner than the shell lead is used inside the amplifier with a length of 30~40 cm. Therefore, it is thought that the amount of information generated by the MC cartridge is greatly reduced by the time it reaches the phono equalizer amplifier due to its resistance. As a countermeasure,

The HSA-01 was developed as a headshell with a built-in head amplifier that significantly amplifies the signal level at the closest part of the cartridge to prevent degradation of the amount of information.

The HSA-01 has a built-in head amplifier with a 14x amplification factor inside the headshell. The head amplifier part is built into the convex part at the base of the shell, and only the battery is visible from the back.

The simple and high-performance amplifier circuit with an all-analog configuration has succeeded in obtaining a large output of about 0.9V with a limited power supply voltage of 3V.

This unit uses a CR1632 type lithium-ion coin-cell battery, which achieves a continuous use time of about 60 hours, and is designed to minimize troublesome battery replacement.

To use it, simply install the cartridge, wire it, and turn on the slide switch on the top of the shell.

The amplifier part of the HSA-01 is miniaturized to the utmost in order to be incorporated into the headshell, and its internal circuit is auditioned

We use carefully selected high-quality sound components. Even with such an ultra-small amplifier, the sound changes greatly depending on the components. The printed circuit board and battery holder, which are the main components, are gold-plated as a measure against sound quality.

The frequency response of HSA-01 is very wide, +0 and -1dB from 10Hz~100kHz. It faithfully reproduces ultra-low and ultra-high frequency signals that have not been noticed in record playback until now, so familiar records may be reborn as if they were something else. It also increases the signal level closer to the cartridge, which reduces the effects of tonearm resonance that causes feedback and may improve the feedback margin.

The shell body of the HSA-01 is made of extremely hard and dense African ebony, which is precisely machined by Yamamoto's NC machine. In order to incorporate the head amplifier, the outline should be as small as possible and the weight should be as light as possible. This is a product that would not have been possible without Yamamoto, who owns the processing machine. A power switch is placed on the upper surface of the body, and the power is turned on and off on the top surface of the shell, and it is also possible to display it with an LED.

The amplification factor (boost ratio) of the HSA-01 is set to 14 times (23 dB), so the output of an MC cartridge with an output of 0.2 mV is amplified to 2.8 mV, which is compatible with most MC cartridges. The input impedance of the phono equalizer amplifier to be connected should be 47 kΩ, which is considered to be standard, and the output from the arm should be connected directly to the PHONO input terminal at the MM position.

When using the HSA-01, it can be used simply by turning on the power switch after replacing the shell with the normal cartridge with the power switch turned off. When the headshell is attached, set the volume of the preamplifier to the minimum when turning on the power switch. Its own weight is 12.5g, which is standard weight for a headshell, so it can be used with most arms.

Review
If you boost the music signal of a low-output MC cartridge immediately after the cartridge picks up the signal from the board before degrading the sound through long cables and contacts, you should be able to get a purer sound! So, the MC head amplifier has been incorporated into the headshell of the new product HSA-01. The company's most popular ebonyIt looks like a headshell HS-1A with a head amplifier built into it, and the more I look at it, the more I am impressed with how well it was made.I am grateful that the coin-type battery can be easily attached and detached without overdoing it by using a precision screwdriver. The weight of the entire headshell, including the cartridge, also depends on the weight of the cartridge, but it would be easier to balance if there were subweights. By the way, in the turntable DENON DP-70M used this time, zero balance could not be obtained when an 11g cartridge was installed, and a sub-weight was used.
It can be said that the freshness of the sound is extremely high. This time, the MC cartridge uses Jasmine Audio's middle-class forest (0.34mV), which not only demonstrates the performance of the cartridge well, but also has a more direct feeling, higher resolution, and a very clear sound. The realism and atmosphere of the live sound source, such as the musical instruments and the murmurs of the performers, is also vividly conveyed.
Fine lines and various points of contactRather than amplifying the weak sound signal that has finally arrived using an expensive MC transformer or head amplifier, it is at the very front where the purity does not deteriorate.Weak sound signalAmplification is not affected by external influences, and high-quality, high-quality sound with high freshness can be obtained. Moreover, since the amplified signal is delivered, the MM phono equalizer side also has a considerable margin for gain, so it is a gem with excellent cost performance.
